Buying a used car can save you a lot of money, and if you know how to shop around, you can also get a lot of good value with your purchase. The trick is knowing how to properly assess a used car so that you know that you’re not paying for a faulty product. Here a few tips for used-car shopping.

1. Check the Reviews
Before you settle on a car make and model, read a few reviews online. Read both reviews by car publications and by users, so that you know the car’s track record and reliability. Getting some background on the car lets you know what to expect. Pay attention to the car’s  economy rating, and crash test results.

2. Check the Vehicle History
Always run a history report on a used car you’re thinking of buying. There are several companies who can do this for you if you just provide the VIN number of the car. They’ll let you know if the car has been stolen, repossessed, or has been flooded or in any major accidents. Checking the history of a used vehicle helps make sure you don’t get stuck with a lemon.

3. Check the Blue Book
Look in the Kelly Blue Book to find out what the fair price for the vehicle you’re considering buying is. The Blue Book does not give you a 100% accurate price, but it gives you the average price of a particular kind of car, that way you at least know what a reasonable price is. Helps you negotiate well.

4. Get the Car Professionally Checked
Even if the car looks great, get it professionally checked by a good mechanic (someone from a shop you know and trust, preferably) before you purchase it. If you offer to pay for the inspection, there’s no reason why the owner shouldn’t agree. It’s inexpensive and could save you thousands later.

5. Don’t Shop Alone
Bringing someone along for the shopping provides you with a second opinion, which helps you stay level headed and able to spot a bad (or good) deal. You may also consider speaking with a top CA lemon lawyer before shopping.
