The Ford Mustang is a classic automobile that was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. This car was originally meant to be based on the second generation of the North American Ford Falcon which was a compact war. However, the car took on a life of its own during the development of the car making, eventually evolving it into one of the most famous cars in the entire Ford line of vehicles. In fact, the Ford Mustang has been thought to be the poster child of American motor vehicles. It has been noted to be the number one car in United States history.
It was introduced on the 17th April of 1964 and was almost immediately the most successful launch of a car model since th Ford Model A. The Mustang succeeded in created what is now known as the pony car class of North American automobiles. This type of car is a sports cars that were constructed as coupes with very long hoods and shorter rear decks, giving it rise to the competitors like GM’s Chevrolet Camaro and the defunct AMC Javelin as well as Chrysler’s revamped version of the Plymouth Barracuda. The Ford Mustang also inspired more of these coup/ sports car hybrids such as the Toyota Celica and the Ford Capri, both of which were imported to the United States soon after the Ford Mustang’s rise to fame.
The production of the Ford Mustang began in the town of Dearborn Michigan during the 9th of March in 1964, but the car wasn’t released and introduced to the public until April the 17th of 1964 at the New York World’s Fair as the future of the Ford Motor Company’s line of vehicles. It is the number 3 oldest nameplate that Ford currently keeps in production newer models. The Ford Mustang is right alongside the F-Series pickup truck line, though this truck has gone through numerous nameplate changes over the years, and the Ford Falcon, which are only still in production in Australia and several select parts of Western Europe.
The name was coined by Ford’s Executive stylist, John Najjar, who got the idea from the World War II fighter jet known as the P-51 Mustang Fighter Jet. Though, it did not become the official name until it was reinforced by another employee of Ford, a market research manager known as Robert J Eggert who was a breeder of quarter horses. He got the idea from a birthday present from his wife; a book called “The Mustangs” by a J Frank Dobie in mid 1960. Once John Najjar and Robert J Eggert corresponded, the book’s title and the name of the fighter jet became the new name for the Ford concept car now known across the globe as the Ford Mustang. This was even though the designer wanted the car to be known as the Cougar or the Torino. In fact, the name Torino was even used during some preliminary market advertising campaigns. Henry Ford the second wanted it to be known as the T-Bird II as a tribute to the former T-Bird, but test groups that the Ford Motor company tried out all agreed that the name Mustang was far better than the alternatives.
